Railways is mulling over widening the scope of medical treatment for its employees by proving a health insurance cover to them. This means that around 13 lakh railway employees across the country will likely benefit from this move.
In a statement given by it on Wednesday, Indian Railways said that it was already providing medical health facilities to its employees and their dependent family members through 'Railway Employees Liberalized Health Scheme' and 'Central Government Health Services'. "Indian Railways is now proposing to widen the scope of medical treatment of railway employees," it said further.
The national carrier has already constituted a committee to examine all the relevant aspects related to this 'Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme' for railways’ staff with a view to provide an insurance cover against financial risks during medical, emergencies and otherwise, the statement said.
Indian Railways has even requested all general managers of zonal railways and production units for their views/suggestions on the aforesaid proposal.
As per a PTI report, the Indian Railways has a chain of 586 health units, 45 sub-divisional hospitals, 56 divisional hospitals, eight production unit hospitals and 16 zonal hospitals spread all over the country with more than 2500 posts of doctors and over 35,000 paramedic staff.
During the pandemic, the Railways dedicated more than 6,500 hospital beds, which is half the number of beds from its 125 hospitals, to COVID-19 patients across the country, the report further said.
For the last six decades Central Government Health Scheme is providing comprehensive medical care to the Central Government employees and pensioners enrolled under the scheme.

Presently approximately 35 lakh beneficiaries are covered by CGHS in 71 cities all over India and the endeavour is to include more cities to improve the accessibility of the services, CGHS website says.
