Cyclone Biparjoy Highlights: Day ahead of landfall, 50,000 people evacuated in Gujarat
Cyclone Biparjoy Highlights: Cyclone Biparjoy is wreaking havoc in many coastal areas in India, and at present, as per the Met department, the cyclone is barrelling towards the Gujarat coast even as parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region received heavy rains along with strong winds on Wednesday. At present, a total of 33 teams have been earmarked by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to undertake relief and rescue operations in Gujarat and Maharashtra ahead of the expected landfall of cyclone near the Jakhau port in Kutch district.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the cyclone is expected to make landfall tomorrow (June 15). "Biparjoy' expected to make landfall on Thursday evening as a "very severe cyclonic storm" with maximum wind speed reaching up to 150 kilometres per hour," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
A total of 18 NDRF teams have already been placed in Gujarat, while one has been stationed in Diu.
The NDRF officials said that four NDRF teams have been deployed in Gujarat's Kutch district, three each in Rajkot and Devbhumi Dwarka, two in Jamnagar, one each in Porbandar, Junagarh, Gir Somnath, Morbi, Valsad, and Gandhinagar.
In the neighbouring Maharashtra, out of the total 14 NDRF teams, five have been deployed in Mumbai, while the rest have been kept on standby, the officials said.

According to the Gujarat's State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), in last 24 hour, 54 talukas across the Saurashtra and Kutch districts received more than 10 mm of rainfall. The districts of Devbhumi Dwarka, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, and Junagadh witnessed particularly intense rainfall.

Abdullah Yousuf Madhvani who oversees a workshop in Mandvi told PTI that it takes two years to build a ship. "The construction of one ship costs us around Rs 50 to 70 lakh. Our fear is that the cyclone will destroy the ships which are in various stages of construction," he said.
