LIVE UPDATES: President Of India Elections 2022 Results: NDA's Droupadi Murmu crosses is set to become 15th President of India after she the crossed majority mark.

    Modi visited Murmu's temporary residence here to congratulate her and said she has emerged as a ray of hope for citizens, especially the poor, the marginalised and the downtrodden.

    BJP president J P Nadda also met Murmu to congratulate her.

    In a series of tweets, Modi said, "India scripts history. At a time when 1.3 billion Indians are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a daughter of India hailing from a tribal community born in a remote part of eastern India has been elected our President!

    He congratulated Murmu on being elected to the top Constitutional post.

    "Droupadi Murmu Ji's life, her early struggles, her rich service and her exemplary success motivates each and every Indian. She has emerged as a ray of hope for our citizens, especially the poor, marginalised and the downtrodden," he said in tweets.

    The prime minister also thanked all MPs and MLAs across party lines who supported her candidature and said her "record victory" augurs well for our democracy.

    "Droupadi Murmu Ji has been an outstanding MLA and Minister. She had an excellent tenure as Jharkhand governor. I am certain she will be an outstanding President who will lead from the front and strengthen India's development journey," he said.

    In anticipation of her win, celebrations had started at many places as the counting of votes progressed and she inched near the victory mark. BJP members put up banners and posters at several places.

    A folk dance group performed outside her residence here while BJP members distributed sweets at many places as Murmu becomes India's first President from the Scheduled Tribes community.

    The NDA's presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu on Thursday crossed the 50 per cent mark after the third round of counting to emerge victorious in the poll over her rival Yashwant Sinha.

    An official announcement on her win is expected after all votes are counted but she has already got 5,77,777 votes, which is more than the halfway mark of the total valid votes cast in the election on July 18.

    Returning Officer P C Mody announced that Murmu has already received over 53 per cent of the total valid votes. Ballots from 10 states and Union territories are being still counted.

    In every round of counting so far, she has received more than two-third votes.

    Sources said 17 MPs from opposition parties have cross-voted in her support.

  • The counting for the second round of votes of the MLAs has begun, officials said.

  • Going by the strength of the parties who officially extended support to Murmu, she is estimated to have got votes of five to six more MPs. As many as 538 MPs of various parties had extended their support to Murmu ahead of the election, but a few of them did not vote.

    On the other hand, Sinha's total vote value stood at 1,45,600, which is 27.81 per cent of the total valid votes.

  • With each MP having a vote value of 700 in this presidential election, Murmu received a total of 5,23,600 votes which is 72.19 per cent of the total valid MP votes, indicating some cross-voting in her favour, officials said.

    - The NDA's presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu is leading with 540 of the 748 votes of the MPs, while Opposition nominee Yashwant Sinha has received 208 votes after the first round of counting, Returning Officer P C Mody said on Thursday.

    -Votes of 15 MPs were declared invalid, he said, adding that all the votes of MPs have been counted.

    -Eight MPs did not vote in the presidential election, Mody said.

  • Several legislators say they cross-voted in favour of Murmu

    Several legislators in states on Monday said they have cross-voted in favour of NDA nominee Droupadi Murmu by not following their party line in the presidential election.

  • Voting concludes in presidential election, total turnout at Parliament 98.90%

    Earlier, the officer had said that six MPs did not cast their vote, but the figure was revised to eight after recompilation of the data.

  • Briefing reporters after the voting, Returning Officer Mody said out of 736 electors comprising 727 MPs and nine MLAs permitted by the Election Commission to vote at the Parliament house, 728 (719 MPs and nine MLAs) cast their votes.

  • Going by the stand taken by various parties, NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu is set to win the poll against joint Opposition nominee Yashwant Sinha.

    Murmu, who at 64 could be among the youngest presidents of India, did not speak today but said on Sunday that tribals and women are delighted over her nomination.

    "There are around 10 crore tribals with more 700 communities, and all are delighted with my nomination," she was quoted as saying at a gathering of NDA MPs.

     

  • According to the Election Commission's directions, while MPs get a green ballot paper, the MLAs get a pink ballot paper. The separate colours help the returning officer ascertain the value of vote of each MLA and MP.

  • These preferences for the candidates are to be marked by the elector, by placing the figures 1,2,3, 4, 5 and so on, against the names of the candidates in the order of preference in column 2 of the ballot paper.

    In accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote, every elector can mark as many preferences as there are candidates contesting the election.

  • The value of vote of an MLA varies in different states. In Uttar Pradesh, the value is 208, followed by 176 in Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu. In Maharashtra, it is 175. In Sikkim, the value of vote per MLA is seven, while it is nine in Nagaland and eight in Mizoram.

     

  • The value of the vote of an MP has gone down to 700 from 708 in this presidential poll due to the absence of a legislative assembly in Jammu and Kashmir.
