Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase 1 Voting: Polling begins amid tight security; over 16.6 crore electors to decide fate of 1,600+ candidates
Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase 1 Voting : India entered the first phase of its mega, seven-phase, five-yearly polling exercise under tight security at 7 am today. The first phase covers as many as 102 Parliamentary Constituencies--or seats--spread across 21 states and Union Territories. The 102 Lok Sabha seats comprise 73 in the General category and the rest in ST/SC categories. Besides, Phase 1 also includes 92 Assembly Constituencies in the Assembly Elections in Arunachal and Sikkim. Voting will continue till 6 pm.
How many voters will cast their ballots in Phase 1?
In the first phase, more than 18 lakh polling officials will welcome more than 16.63 crore voters across 1.87 lakh polling stations. Those 16.63 crore voters comprise 8.4 crore male electors, 8.23 crore female electors, and 11,371 third-gender electors. The first phase will also see 35.67 lakh first-time voters registered to cast their votes. And last but not least, there are 3.51 crore voters in the age group 20-29 years.

After polling is carried out between April 19 and June 1, votes will be counted on June 4 and the results declared the same day.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase 1 Voting: Tripura records 34.5% voter turnout in 4 hours
The northeastern state is leading the voter turnout charts at 34.5 per cent within the first four hours of polling, till 11 am.
Meghalaya is close behind, with a voter turnout of 33.1 per cent.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase 1 LIVE: More than 19% voter turnout recorded so far in Maharashtra
Five Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra are undergoing polling today:
- Ramtek
- Nagpur
- Bhandara - Gondiya
- Gadchiroli - Chimur
- Chandrapur
The five seats recorded a voter turnout of 19.4 per cent till 11 am, news agency Press Trust of India cited an official as saying.
The five seats have more than 95 lakh eligible voters, which means that an 18.4 lakh voters are estimated to have cast their ballots so far.
