Ruling BJP set to secure 2nd consecutive poll win in Uttarakhand; Pushkar Singh Dhami, Harish Rawat trail
Dehradun, Mar 10 (PTI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Congress leader Harish Rawat, who led the campaigns of their respective parties in the assembly polls, were trailing on their respective seats on Thursday.
The ruling BJP looked all set to secure a second consecutive term in office in Uttarakhand leading in 44 out of the total 70 seats, according to latest trends.
While Dhami was trailing behind Congress's Bhuvan Chandra Kapri in Khatima by 2,287 votes, Rawat was trailing behind BJP's Mohan Singh Bisht by 13,893 votes.
It will be clear later in the afternoon on what ultimately happens on these two seats.
However, if the trends are an indication of the outcome, then it is going to be difficult for both the parties to choose the next chief minister as Rawat and Dhami were billed to be the leading probables for the top office.
The Congress had not declared Rawat as its chief ministerial candidate. Dhami on other hand was almost the BJP's chief ministerial candidate as the party was seeking a full five-year-term for the "young and dynamic" leader to deliver on the party's grand vision for Uttarakhand's development.
However, the BJP appears on way to making history by winning two successive assembly elections in the state as it had never happened in its 21-year history.
BJP leading in Uttarakhand in early trends
The BJP was ahead of the Congress in Uttarakhand with its party candidates leading in 26 seats on Thursday, according to early trends available.
According to data available on the Election Commission website at 10:10 AM am for 48 seats, the Congress was ahead in 18 seats, BSP in two seats, the Uttarakhand Janekta party and independent in one each.
The polling was held in the state on February 14 with more than 65 per cent of the electorate casting their votes.
The ruling BJP is seeking a second consecutive term in office this time, something which has never happened in the state's 21-year history.
Routed in the 2017 assembly polls with a tally of 11 seats against the BJP's 57, the Congress is trying to stage a comeback.
Prominent candidates who contested the polls are Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, his cabinet colleagues Satpal Maharaj, Bansidhar Bhagat, Subodh Uniyal, Arvind Pandey, Dhan Singh Rawat and Rekha Arya, besides state BJP president Madan Kaushik.
Important Congress leaders whose fate will be decided include former chief minister Harish Rawat, former minister Yashpal Arya, state Congress president Ganesh Godiyal and Leader of Opposition in the fourth assembly Pritam Singh.
- Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on has said the BJP's electoral performance would exceed exit poll projections, the most of which have given the party a comfortable majority in the state.
-"Most of the exit polls have given the party a majority. Some have given us 43 seats, some 45 and others 47. But we will exceed these projections when the results are announced. We will return to power with a thumping majority," Dhami told reporters, as per PTI.
-He said the party had set itself a target of winning more than sixty seats in Uttarakhand this time and it still has that goal in mind.
Recording a landslide victory, the BJP had won 57 seats in the 70-member House in the 2017 Uttarakhand assembly elections, confining the Congress to 11 seats.
-Matching the party's performance this time is one of the biggest challenges for Chief Minister Dhami.
-"We know people have given their stamp of approval on the development work carried out in the state under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi," Dhami said.
- People have voted for further development of the road and rail infrastructure in Uttarakhand and the BJP's vision of making it one of the leading states in the country by 2025, he said.
-Asked if he would be the chief minister again, Dhami said he is an ordinary party worker and was given the task of running the state.
He said he tried his best to do it.
-"I have always done what my party has asked me to do and will always do what it asks me to do in future," he said.
Results trends will start from 8 AM on 10th March 2022, says Election Commission website - https://results.eci.gov.in/
