Yohi Adityanath leading from Gorakhpur seat by over 31,000 votes
Lucknow/Gorakhpur, Mar 10 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was heading for a landslide victory and leading by around 31,000 votes from Gorakhpur Urban seat on Thursday.
According to updated Election Commission figures, Adityanath has secured 47,427 votes while his nearest rival, Samajwadi Party's Subhawati Shukla, bagged 16,427 votes.
The BSP's Khwaja Shamsuddin has secured 3,151 votes and Chandra Shekhar of Azad Samaj Party 2,619 votes.
Chetna Pandey of the Congress was struggling with 685 votes while the AAP's Vijay Kumar Shrivastava secured 321 votes, according to the updated figures.
A total of 381 NOTA votes was polled so far in the key constituency.
Adityanath, contesting his first assembly election, did not seem to be getting much fight from rivals on the Gorakhpur seat.
While Adityanath was watching the poll outcome from his official residence in Lucknow, his supporters at the Gorakhpur Math and also at the party office started celebrating his and the BJP's victory in the state.
A large number of party workers had already gathered at the BJP's party office in Beniganj in Gorakhpur. They were raising slogans like "Modi-Yogi zindabad" and "Jai Shri Ram".
Some of them also burst crackers and took out a small march.
A lot of people had also gathered at the Hindu Sevashram in Gorakhnath temple. They have been watching the election results on big TV screen.
Meanwhile, only a handful of people were present at the Samajwadi Party's office here.
BJP set for big win in Uttar Pradesh, party alliance leading in 272 seats
The ruling BJP appeared on course to retain power in Uttar Pradesh, with poll trends on Thursday showing the party-led alliance leading in 272 seats as against 123 of its nearest rival Samajwadi Party.
The state has 403 assembly seats and 202 seats are needed to form a majority government.
Trends are available for all 403 seats so far.
Prominent candidates who have secured a lead include Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur Urban, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav from Karhal, Shivpal Yadav from Jaswant Nagar and Congress Legislature Party leader Aradhana Shukla from Rampur Khas (Pratapgarh).
Adityanath is heading for a landslide victory in Gorakhpur Urban seat leading over his nearest rival, SP's Subhawati Shukla, by about 15,000 votes.
The BSP nominee has secured 1,477 votes while Chandra Shekhar of Azad Samaj Party has bagged 1,386 votes. Chetna Pandey of the Congress is struggling with 272 votes and AAP nominee Vijay Kumar Shrivastava with 93 votes.
However, Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya is trailing from Sirathu seat while Swami Prasad Maurya of the SP is also trailing from Fazil Nagar seat. Congress State president Ajay Kumar Lallu is trailing from Tumkuhi Raj.
According to official trends available for 403 seats, the BJP is leading in 259 seats while its allies Apna Dal (S) and Nishad party are leading in 10 and three seats, respectively.
While the Samajwadi Party is leading in 112 seats, its allies SBSP and RLD are leading in three and eight seats respectively.
The BSP and the Congress were leading in three and two seats, respectively. Two candidates of the Jansatta Dal, including Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya in Kunda seat, were leading.
The BJP's vote percentage is 42.3, while the SP got 31.6 per cent votes. The Congress has got a meagre 2.40 per cent, while the BSP got 12.7 per cent.
In 2017, the BJP got 312 seats and its allies Apna Dal and SBSP nine and four seats, respectively. The SP got 47, BSP 19, Congress 7 and others five seats in the last assembly elections.
BJP leading in 247 seats in UP, appears set to form govt once again

Prominent candidates who have secured a lead include Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav from Karhal, Shivpal Yadav from Jaswant Nagar, and Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya from Sirathu.
The BSP and the Congress were leading in five and four seats respectively. The Apna Dal (Sonelal) was leading in 11 seats and the RLD in seven, according to latest trends.
Two candidates of the Jansatta Dal, including Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya in Kunda seat, were leading.
Congress Legislature Party leader Aradhana Mishra Mona was leading in Rampur Khas constituency by over 500 votes.
BJP candidate and minister Shrikant Sharma was leading from Mathura constituency.
The BJP candidate is leading in the temple town of Ayodhya over his nearest SP rival.
According to the website of Election Commission, Ved Prakash Gupta of the BJP is leading over his SP rival Tej Narayan alias Pawan Pandey by 656 votes.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya is trailing from Sirathu seat by about 400 votes on Thursday, according to poll trends.
After the initial round of counting, Maurya secured 6,345 votes while his nearest rival SP's Pallavi Patel got 6,710 votes, according to the EC.
New history being created in Uttar Pradesh: BJP
With the BJP leaving its rivals comfortably behind in states like Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand in the initial rounds of vote counting, its leaders credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's governance model for the expected win and said "new history" is being created in UP.
Party general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya and spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi asserted that people have expressed their faith in the policies ushered in by Modi.
Trivedi said the BJP will end up winning close to 300 seats and asserted that what is clear is that a new history is being created in Uttar Pradesh.
It has never happened in India's largest and politically most important state that a chief minister is set to come back to power with a majority after serving a full term as the head of a government with full majority.
Several BJP leaders also lauded Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath for effectively implementing welfare policies and providing an efficient and clean governance.
Many party leaders simply tweeted "Jai Shri Ram" to hail the trends projecting a big win for the party which is also ahead in Goa and Manipur.
"The silent BJP voter gives the loudest message on poll day," BJP youth wing president Tejasvi Surya tweeted.
The Election Commission website showed that the BJP is leading in nearly 250 seats in the 403-member assembly and around 44 in the 70-member Uttarakhand assembly.
