All eyes were also on the bye polls to fill as many as 25 Assembly constituencies in 12 states: Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Follow this space to catch updates of the bye elections to the 25 Assembly seats.

Bye Elections Results 2024 Updates: Besides the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, all eyes will also be on the outcome of bye polls to fill as many as 25 Assembly constituencies spread across 12 states as the Election Commission of India (ECI) begins counting votes starting at 8 am on Tuesday, June 4. The results of bye polls, covering a host of key Assembly seats in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, come on the same day the composition of the 18th Lok Sabha will be decided by electors following a mega, six-weeks-long polling exercise in the world's largest democracy. Bye elections - also known as by-elections - are special elections held to fill a political office that has become vacant between general elections. The outcome of bye elections - or by polls - is equally crucial as any other state Assembly polls as they ensure that the representation of the people remains intact and that governance continues smoothly.

It is the bye elections that not only help in filling the void created by the departure or death of an elected representative, ensuring that the constituency is not left without proper representation, but also in upholding the democratic principles of fair representation and giving electors the opportunity to select their leaders. Bye elections can significantly impact the balance of power in a government, potentially leading to shifts in policies and decision-making. Bye elections play a vital role in the political landscape by upholding democratic values and ensuring the continuity of governance in the absence of elected representatives. ALSO READ: Lok Sabha Election Results | Odisha & Andhra Pradesh Assembly Elections

  • Election Results LIVE Update: What is the NOTA election option?

Ever heard about NOTA? NOTA, short for "none of the above", is an interesting feature of the Indian electoral system that empowers voters to disapprove all the contesting candidates in their electoral domain. How does it function? Opting for NOTA is, in essence, a voter's way of expressing their discontent with the current candidate lineup, thus keeping their preferred candidate's identity confidential. NOTA is no less than a tool for individuals to express their dissatisfaction with the political contestants and the parties they represent. This encourages an elevated level of accountability and transparency throughout the process of election.

Though NOTA cannot swing the election results, it symbolises a public outcry for superior governance, enabling citizens to express their displeasure and demand improvement.

  • Election Results LIVE Update: Indore logs record NOTA (none of the above) count in Lok Sabha polls

While the BJP is leading in all the 29 Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh, as per the latest counting trends, a record 1,82,766 electors opted for the NOTA (none of the above) option in Indore, a new record. While the BJP's Shankar Lalwani took a decisive lead of over eight lakh votes in Indore, the second-highest votes were counted in favour of NOTA.
