Haridwar District Magistrate C Ravishankar issued the order regarding the closure of all schools and educational institutions on Thursday in Haridwar as per a report by ANI. In the last 24 hours, the state of Uttarakhand has reported 787 new cases of COVID-19. 265 recoveries and three deaths in the state have also been reported in the last 24 hours.

The constant rise in the number of COVID-19 cases all over the country seems like a deja vu to the initial days of the pandemic in the country last year. When the COVID-19 pandemic first struck the country, the schools and other educational institutions were closed down all over the country and nation-wide lockdown was imposed.

As situation seemed to have normalised, some state governments decided to reopen schools. However, the recent surge in the number of coronavirus cases is compelling the authorities to shut down the educational institutions once again. The authorities are also adopting stricter restrictions to contain the disease.

Several other states including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Chhattisgarh and others have instructed to close down schools till the middle of this month. In Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow’s District Magistrate Abhishek Prakash in a statement said that all government and non-government schools, colleges, coaching institutes and other educational institutes, barring medical, nursing and para-medical ones will remain closed till April 15.

Amidst the rising number of cases in the state as well as the country and the ongoing Kumbh Mela, the Haridwar administration has decided to close down schools till April 15, 2021.

The Kumbh Mela started earlier this month. Usually, this congregation continues for almost four months. However, this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the duration of the Mela has been reduced to one month.
