UGC exams 2020: The Supreme Court has decided not to change its stance on this year’s final university examinations which were hit by coronavirus outbreak. The Court on Friday didn’t pass any final order in the ongoing case over the date of the final year examination of the universities. The next hearing will be on August 10. The UGC has mandated that all universities will have to complete final year examinations by September 30.

At the same time, it advised students to keep preparing for the exams and not think that they will be postponed again.

“Students should continue to prepare for the examinations. Students should not be under the impression that examinations will be stayed because of the Supreme Court hearing,” the UGC said in the court on Friday.

The universities have the option to choose between offline, online or a mixed of both, as the examination method. The universities can also hold separate exams for those who won’t be able to take them on the scheduled date, the UGC said. However, several petitions have been submitted demanding a cancellation of the final year examination, in the view of the pandemic situation and also the flood situation in Assam and Bihar.

If the Supreme Court doesn’t cancel the final year examinations in the next hearing, then the universities and the students will have only a month for preparation.

However, the Court has informed that it has allowed universities to conduct “special exams when feasible” for those students who are unable to appear for the final-year and final-semester exams by September-end. The lead petitioner had filed a rejoinder due to this stating that UGC was not taking into account the worsening state of Covid-19 cases.

The lead petition in the case was filed by Anubha Shrivastava Sahai and was argued by Advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava, while Senior Advocate Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared for final-year law student Yash Dubey.
