Shillong Colleges and Universities Closed Today 2021: The steep rise in the number of COVID-19 cases across the country has baffled state administrations. Several states have imposed nigh curfews, even lockdowns and closed down schools and other educational institutions to curb the spread of the disease. The Meghalaya government has also ordered the shutting down of all colleges and universities in the state capital Shillong till May 3, 2021.

As per a PTI report, the Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong also said that the shops dealing in non-essential items in Shillong will also be closed from April 26 to May 2.

The present situation seems like a deja vu when the pandemic struck the country one year back. The schools, colleges and other educational institutions were closed down all over the country. As situation seemed to be normalised the schools and other institutions were reopening in various states in a phased manner. However, the recent surge in the number of coronavirus cases have compelled the state governments to close down the educational institutions once again.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister after a COVID-19 review meeting with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said to the reporters, "Colleges and universities in the state capital have been asked to shut down till May 3 except for those that are hosting state board examinations." The Meghalaya government has already shut down schools from the primary and the higher secondary levels.

Certain other states have also resorted to similar measures amidst this adverse COVID-19 situation in the country. In Rajasthan, the state government has imposed a 15-day lockdown in the state to control the spread of the pandemic across the state. All the schools and other educational institutions have been ordered to close. Later, summer vacation has been announced for the schools in the state till June 6, 2021.

Coming back to Meghalaya,  gyms, swimming pools, gaming parlours, cinemas, clubs, salons and bars in the capital of this north-eastern state have also been ordered to remain closed till April 30, 2021. On Wednesday, East Khasi Hills reported 148 new COVID-19 cases and three fresh fatalities. There are 746 active cases in the district at present.
