CBSE Class 11 admission: Students can now pick any combination of subjects; here is all you need to know

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has cancelled the class 10 board examination considering the seriousness of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the country. The board has also released the evaluation criteria based on which class 10 students will be evaluated and the admission criteria for class 11. 

Earlier for admissions in class 11 students had to opt for the stream in which they wanted to pursue their studies like Science, Commerce or Arts. But now the board has asked to avoid streaming for the admissions in class 11. As per the new policy, students will now be allowed to choose any combination of subjects without any streaming.

According to CBSE, a maximum of 9 subjects and a minimum of 5 subjects can be picked by a student who will be taking admission in class 11. 

Can students opt for subjects from different stream? The answer is yes. They can opt for any subject belonging to any stream. For example, they can pick subjects like Maths, History, Biology and Physics all together. 

CBSE has also said that this is not something new which the board is offering as it has been offered for several years and students have always been given the liberty to choose their subjects for Class 11 and 12 as per their wish. The only condition is that it should fall in the scheme of subjects offered by the board.

As per the policy, students will be able to choose one language and any four electives in any combination. The only condition is the subject should be taught in the school. Students can also opt for an additional 6th subject and study it on their own as per the prescribed syllabus. Students can even opt for a subject for which no teacher is there in the school. 

While talking about the class 10 assessment criteria, the board has said that the students will be evaluated on the basis of marks obtained in the tests and exams held during the academic year. They will be assessed out of a maximum of 100 marks for each subject.  

Out of which 20 marks have to be submitted by the schools as internal assessment, while the remaining 80 marks will be based on the marks scored in periodic tests, half-yearly or mid-term exams and pre-board examinations.
