372 mobiles, 906 numbers blocked in Centre's action against fraudsters posing as LIC officials
According to a press release by the Ministry of Communications, in some recent complaints received by the DoT, the fraudsters impersonated LIC officials and insurance company representatives for the redemption of SBI Rewards. The DoT took action against such fraud after receiving complaints from 14 mobile numbers on May 19, 2024.
In an attempt to prevent cybercrimes caused by fraudulent calls, the Department of Telecommunication has blocked 372 phones so far, while services to 906 mobile connections were suspended pan-India on May 21, 2024.
Within 24 hours of receiving such complaints, the DoT analysed these cases and generated all the linkages for all the mobile numbers that received fraudulent communication.

The complaints were reported by citizens via the Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications facility on the Sanchar Saathi portal.
The DoT also emphasised citizens' proactive contribution by reporting such fraudulent communications and taking swift action against such activities, and how they are contributing to a safer digital environment.

Chakshu is the newest service that has been added to the citizen-centric services on DoT's Sanchar Saathi site. Intending to defraud KYC expiry or updates of bank account, payment wallet, SIM, gas connection, electricity connection, sextortion, impersonating a government official or relative to send money or disabling of all mobile numbers by the DoT etc, Chakshu enables citizens to report suspected fraud communication received over call, SMS, or WhatsApp.
