FSSAI issues new definitions for single malt and single grain whiskey
The food regulator says single malt whiskey will be the one made from only malted barley, in a still pot, at a single distillery. The new whisky norms will be implemented from March 1, 2024.
Liquor brands that sell other drinks in the name of whisky should beware of their malpractice now as the FSSAI has tightened the screws on them. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has come up with clear definitions of malt whisky and single grain whisky.
The new definitions will come into effect on March 1, 2024.
As per the new definition, single malt whisky is the one made from only malted barley in a still pot at a single distillery.
As per the definition of single grain whisky, it should come from the same grain, the same still pot, and the same distillery condition.
The FSSAI further said that manufacturers are not allowed to display nutritional information on the label, while it has made energy information optional for liquor brands.
The FSSAI has also issued a notification regarding the development.
Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies has welcomed the steps of the FSSAI and said that the new definition would make it easier for the industry to identify whisky brands.
