Tomato Sale at Rs 60/KG: The government on Wednesday kicked off the sale of tomatoes at a subsidised rate of Rs 60 per kilogram in several parts of Mumbai including Sayan, Worli, Borivali and Lower Parel, in a bid to stabilise the retail prices of the commodity in some relief to the common man. As part of the arrangement, National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd (NCCF) vans will supply and sell tomatoes at the subsidised rate of Rs 60 per kilogram across Mumbai.

The development comes days after the central government rolled out a similar sale in the National Capital Region (NCR), selling tomatoes at the same retail price.

The initiative is aimed at ensuring fair retail prices and availability of the common kitchen staple in major cities.

Vegetable vendors across Mumbai were reportedly selling tomatoes at much higher prices in Mumbai.

The Centre has established a Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF) to stabilise rising food prices and protect consumers' interests.

NCCF has initiated market intervention to stabilise rising tomato prices in the retail market. It seeks to cool off price increases and maintain price stability in markets.
