The central government's statistics department said on Tuesday that it would release separate sets of monthly data on domestic consumer inflation and factory output at 4 pm going forward instead of the current 5:30 pm. Currently, data on CPI and IIP are released at 5:30 pm. The department, however, decided to keep the dates of release of data unchanged as per the current scheme.

In other words, the time of release of retail inflation and industrial production data has been advanced by 90 minutes from the current 5:30 pm.

The decision is aimed at making the data sets public closer to the closing hours of the financial market, offering more time to access the data on the day of release, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI).

Stating that both data sets play an essential role in economic policy and the financial market, the statistics ministry said that the new timings align with the closing hours of major financial markets in the country "ensuring that CPI data dissemination does not interfere with active trading".

The ministry also said that the adjustment adheres to its commitment to transparency and accessibility in data dissemination.

What are the current timings of the release of CPI (inflation) and IIP (factory) data?

Currently, official readings on consumer inflation and factory output—gauged by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) respectively—are released normally at 5:30 pm on the 12th day of the month.

If the 12th of the month falls on a holiday, the CPI data is released at 5:30 pm on the next working day whereas the IIP data is released at the same time on the previous working day.

When are the data due next?

Separate readings on CPI and IIP will be available at 4 pm on November 12.

Once released, the data are available on the websites of PIB as well as the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
