Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday presided over a meeting of senior civil aviation officials including Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials, where he sought updates regarding the work being done at the under-construction Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram International Airport in Ayodhya. This comes after Scindia and Union Minister General (Retd) VK Singh inspected the under-construction Ayodhya Airport alongwith Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday.

The civil aviation minister has been seeking regular updates regarding the development works and has directed the officials to complete the airport-related works on top priority. The speedy completion of construction work, as the Ram Temple comes closer to completion, happens to be one of top-priorities of the civil aviation minister.

In the first phase, ​​the new terminal building will be spread in an area of 6,500 square meters, which will include an air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, fire station, car parking and related city side infrastructure. The terminal has a capacity of handling 600 passengers per hour and an annual handling capacity of a million passengers.

Passenger amenities like 9 check-in-counters, 3 conveyor belts (1 in departure and 2 in arrival halls), and tactile paths have been provisioned. Car parking for 75 vehicles and a parking facilities for buses is being constructed on the city side of the new terminal building.

The facade of the terminal building (both urban and aerial) will reflect the architecture of the Ram Temple. The interior of the new terminal building is being enlivened with local art from across India, art and paintings depicting the life of Shri Ram. It is proposed to be decorated at different heights to convey a feeling of grandeur of the structure.

In the proposed Phase-2 of the project, another terminal building with a floor area of ​​50,000 square meters will be constructed and the length of the runway will be extended from 2200 meters to 3700 meters.

During his inspection of the airport on Saturday, Scindia had said that Ayodhya's airport should reflect the city's historic significance and culture. "When someone from the country or abroad visits an airport then he/she should get a glimpse of the city's historic significance. Hence Ayodhya's airport should not be just another airport. We have tried to implement Ayodhya's culture in its airport," he said.

"The 6500 square meter airport can land two to three flights in an hour. 2200 metre runway will be constructed which will be extended to 3700 metres in the second stage. This will help all international planes to land at Ayodhya," he added.
