Deepinder Goyal, Founder, Zomato, has tweeted from his official Twitter handle about this initiative of Zomato. The tweet said, "On the @zomato app, customers could always skip cutlery with their orders. We are now changing this from an ‘opt-out’ to an ‘opt-in’. Customers will now have to explicitly request for cutlery, tissues, and straws, if they need it."

He further tweeted, "This small change can help save up to 5,000 kilos of plastic in a day. If you can, please say no to cutlery and do your bit. Read more here – zomato.com/blog/say-no-to-cutlery-in-food-delivery."

This feature has already been rolled out to 50 per cent of the customers and will be rolled out to the rest of the customers within the next three to four weeks.

This initiative by Zomato is a small step towards cutting down the carbon and environmental footprint of our food delivery business. According to the blog post by Zomato, this decision will help the restaurant partners save Rs 2-5, that is, approximately, 0.5-1 per cent of order value, on every order going forward.

In its blog post, Zomato wrote, "Our restaurant partners are excited about this change, we do expect some teething issues as we switch to a new default mode. We do not expect 100% compliance from the restaurant-end at the onset. Muscle memory needs to change, and we hope that it will happen over the next few months."

Zomato concluded the blog saying that this small step will help towards building a environmentally conscious India.
