Xiaomi Founder, Chairman and CEO Lei Jun met Prime Minister Narendra Modi  on Tuesday to share Xiaomi’s journey so far in India, and how smartphones are changing the lives of Indian consumers. Lei Jun arrived in India on Sunday for a week-long trip.

Lei Jun and PM Modi discussed Xiaomi India's manufacturing and growth plans, and PM Modi expressed great support for Xiaomi’s approach, said the company in a release. The meeting ended with Lei Jun presenting Modi a Made-In-India Redmi 4A with all its components displayed in a glass box, and the two taking a selfie together using the recently-launched Redmi Note 4. 

Xiaomi has been an early supporter of Modi’s 'Make in India' initiative, and this month reaffirmed its commitment to India with the opening of a second manufacturing plant in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh and plans to create more than 20,000 jobs in the country in the next three years.

He also met the Minister of Finance, Defence and Corporate Affairs Arun Jaitley and Minister of Law & Justice and Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad.
 

India is now the most important market outside of China for Xiaomi, and is a harbinger of the company's global expansion plans. Xiaomi India achieved annual revenue of over $1 billion for the calendar year of 2016. According to analyst firm IDC, Xiaomi India has become the number one selling smartphone brand online and the second-largest smartphone brand in India in Q4 2016.
