Food delivery company Swiggy delivered 33 million-odd idlis in about a year, a data point that reflects the South Indian dish's huge popularity among consumers. Swiggy made these deliveries between March 30, 2022 and March 25, 2023, according to a company statement. Yet, the south Indian dish is not the most ordered item on its platform, it is actually masala dosa.
According to data revealed by Bengaluru-based Swiggy, an average Hyderabad user spends Rs 6 lakh on the company's platform in a year.
Most ordered item on Swiggy: Is it idli or masala dosa?
Here are some findings basis data released by Swiggy on the World Idli Day, which was celebrated on March 30 this year:
- Maximum idli orders in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai among cities
- Idli quite popular in Mumbai, Coimbatore, Pune, Visakhapatnam, New Delhi, Kolkata and Kochi as well
- Most users in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and Coimbatore order between 8 am and 10 am and during dinner hours
- Users from Bengaluru usually prefer rava idli
- Users from Chennai order ghee podi idli
- Mumbaikars love idli-vada
- Most Hyderabadis relish karampodi ghee idli
Average Hyderabadi Swiggy user spends Rs 6 lakh a year on idli
An average Swiggy user based out of Hyderabad spends Rs 6 lakh a year on idli, ordering 8,428 plates — including orders from various locations from other locations, according to the data.
Idli — often spelled idly — is a type of dish in South Indian cuisine. It is a popular breakfast item in several parts of the country.
