Billionaire Mukesh Ambani — Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries (RIL), India's most valuable company — turned 66 on April 19, 2023. Ambani is at the helm of the business group founded by his father, the legendary businessman Dhirubhai Ambani, in 1958. Born on April 19, 1957, Mukesh Ambani is the eldest of the children of Dhirubhai Ambani and Kokilaben Ambani.

1. Mukesh Ambani and his brother, Anil Ambani, initially shared the top position of the group following the death of their father, Dhirubhai Ambani, in 2002. However, the Ambani brothers decided to split the group in a deal brokered by their mother, Kokilaben Ambani, in 2005, followed by a formal split in 2006.

2. Mukesh Ambani has been on the board of Reliance since 1977.

3. A chemical engineer from the Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai, Mukesh Ambani also holds an MBA degree from Stanford University in the US.

4. Reliance's oil-to-chemicals (O2C) unit operates the world's biggest refining complex at Jamnagar in Gujarat. 

5. Mukesh Ambani has the distinction of leading the establishment of the mega 6,60,000-barrel-per-day Jamnagar refinery, and its integration with petrochemicals, power generation, ports, and related infrastructure.

6. Today, Jamnagar is widely known as the refining hub of the world. Mukesh Ambani also spearheaded the setting up of another refinery next to the first one in Jamnagar, taking the total refining capacity to 1.24 million barrels per day at a single location. 

7. In June 2020, Reliance Industries became net debt free, months ahead of its original schedule. "I have fulfilled my promise to the shareholders by making Reliance net debt free much before our original schedule of March 31, 2021," Mukesh Ambani said, as he assured shareholders that in its "golden decade", RIL would set even more ambitious growth goals and achieve them.
 
8. At the 12th spot in the Bloomberg list of the world's super-rich, Mukesh Ambani is just ahead of Meta Platforms (Facebook) CEO Mark Zuckerberg ($80.1 billion).

Eight of the billionaires ahead of Mukesh Ambani in the ranking are from the US, including Elon Musk at the second spot ($179 billion), Jeff Bezos at the third ($126 billion), Bill Gates at the fourth ($122 billion), and Warren Buffett at the fifth ($122 billion). At the top spot is France's Bernard Arnault, with a net worth of $208 billion.

10. Mukesh Ambani's birthday comes days ahead of the company's financial results for the quarter as well as the financial year ended March 2023. RIL is slated to report its earnings on April 21.
