One of the largest natural gas distribution firm in India - Mahanagar Gas Limited on Saturday raised the prices of domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Compressed natural gas (CNG) by nearly Rs 1.51 and Rs 0.33 per Kg with immediate effects in Mumbai. The company in the notification stated that, with a view to partially pass through an increase in MGL’s input cost of gas on account of dollar appreciation against rupee, increase in proportion of costlier Panna-Mukta and Tapti gas as per the revised domestic gas allocation for supply of gas in priority sector (Domestic PNG and CNG), applicability of additional Gujarat VAT on part of gas supply from Gujarat and increase in OMC trade margin and CNG franchisee dispensing charges, MGL is constrained to increase the basic price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by Rs. 1.51/kg and Domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) by Rs 0.33/ SCM in and around Mumbai, effective from midnight of June 08, 2018 / morning of June 09, 2018.

Accordingly, now inclusive of all taxes of CNG and Domestic PNG in and around Mumbai will be Rs 46.17/Kg and Rs. 27.25/SCM (Slab 1) and Rs 32.85/SCM (Slab 2) respectively, in place of earlier Rs 44.22/Kg and Rs. 2 .87/SCM (Slab 1) and Rs 32.47/SCM (Slab 2) respectively.

MGL in the notification also highlighted the impact of such hike in various vehicle segments. It stated that, this increase would have a marginal impact of Rs. 0.06/KM and Rs. 0.07/KM on the per KM running costs of Auto rickshaws and Taxies respectively.

MGL said, "Even after the above revision, MGL’s CNG still continues to be a very attractive proposition and offers savings of about 61% and 37% as compared to petrol and diesel respectively at current price levels in Mumbai."

It added, "Also, MGL’s Domestic PNG continues to deliver unmatched convenience, safety, reliability and environmental friendliness to consumers, besides being cheaper than subsidised domestic LPG."
