Is e-commerce creating enough short-term jobs this festive season?
Festive season sales on e-commerce websites generate thousands of short-term jobs. These jobs typically last only three months.
Key Highlights
- In September alone demand for 3,500 short term jobs were met only in metro cities.
- There was a 16% increase in demand of blue collard jobs in April.
- Amazon and Flipkart alone were expected to hire nearly 42,000 executives.
The month of September marks the beginning of the festive season with Ganesh Chaturthi and culminates with New Year. E-commerce sites, in light of ample demand during festive season sales, begin hiring many delivery and warehouse executives to assist with the high demand.
“The month of September alone experienced a surge in delivery jobs with 3,500 new jobs added to the metro cities,” QuikrJobs said talking about hiring pattern from its own jobs portal.
It further siad, "The festive season has seen e-commerce companies go on a hiring spree for short-term jobs to meet the high festive-sale demand, which includes jobs such as logistics, delivery executives, customer services and warehouse executives."
A report by Moneycontrol said that the hiring of such executives in temporary jobs was much higher, at nearly 1,00,000.
With Flipkart and Amazon hosting their Big Billion Days and Great Indian sale in September the surge in employing delivery and warehouse executives spiked during the month.
From the last quarter, QuikrJobs said that it saw an increase of 117% applications for warehouse executives and 35% applications for delivery executives from last quarter for temporary jobs. "This year non-metro cities have also seen 50% increase in applications for delivery, drivers and customer experience executives," it said.
“Shortage of delivery, customer service and warehouse executives who are not readily available to meet the festive demand is a challenge for an e-commerce company,” Amit Jain VP and Head of QuikrJobs said.
E-commerce majors, Flipkart and Amazon alone were expected to create nearly 42,000 jobs during the festive season up till December, Business Standard had reported.
However, Flipkart and Amazon did not respond to Zeebiz queries.
