After Delhi, now the compressed natural gas (CNG) and Piped natural gas (PNG) to cost less in Mumbai from Monday as the government cutting the prices of natural gas.

Giving a relief to autorickshaw and taxi drivers along with households, effective from today, CNG will be cheaper by Rs 1.60 a kg, which will now cost Rs 39.97 a kg and PNG by Rs 1.01 per standard cubic meter, which will cost Rs 23.92 per SCM in the city, a PTI report said.

Mahanagar Gas Limited, the city gas distributor, on Monday said that the revised prices will be effective in the municipalities  adjoining Mumbai after factoring local municipal octroi/LBT and/or cesses, the report said.

Thus, the new prices of CNG in areas near the city will be in the range of Rs 39.97-Rs 40.68/kg (inclusive of local taxes) and the cost of domestic PNG will be between Rs 23.92-Rs 24.13/SCM.

On Saturday, the price of natural gas produced by Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC), Oil India Ltd (OIL) and Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) locally was cut by 18% to $2.5 per million British thermal unit (mmBtu) based on its gross heat value for six month period.

This was the fourth reduction in last 18 months following the formula approved by the government in October 2014.

The gas price was last cut on April 1 from $3.82 per mmBtu to $3.06 per mmBtu. On a net-calorific value (NCV) basis, the gas price was on that day cut to $3.4 per mmBtu as compared to $4.24 previously.
