Adani Group-Kenya Airport $1.85 billion deal suspended by Kenyan High Court; details inside

The Kenyan High Court has blocked a $1.85 billion deal between Adani Group's Adani Airport Holdings Ltd and the government of Kenya.

Under the deal, the Kenyan government planned to transfer the controlling rights of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Gautam Adani-led Adani Airport Holdings for 30 years.

However, the deal is put on hold for the time being. Suspending this decision, a High Court of Kenya said that this order will remain suspended until the final order on this matter is announced.

Kenya Law Society President Faith Odhiambo said in a social media post that the Kenya High Court has granted permission to file a judicial review to challenge the decision to lease JKIA to Adani for 30 years, for that  Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) have been approved. Along with this, the court has banned JKIA, prohibiting any work of Adani started privately.

JKIA workers on strike

People of Kenya's Human Rights Commission termed this decision as irrational and said that handing over the country's main airport to an outside company is against the constitution of Kenya. Along with this, jobs in the country will also be affected.

Meanwhile, hundreds of travellers were stuck at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Tuesday night, September 10, when Kenya Aviation Authority (KAA) staff went on strike.
