Tata Nano will make a comeback as Jayem Neo on November 28
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the Jayem Neo in Hyderabad. The new car is expected to travel more than 150 kms on a full charge.
Once touted as the cheapest car in the world, the Tata Nano is making a comeback with an electric motor under the hood.
An Autocar India report said that Tata Nano electric will be launched on November 28 as Jayem Neo.
"Tata Motors will supply complete Nano body shells without the engine and transmission to Coimbatore-based Jayem Automotives who will manufacture and market the EV," the report said.
Jayem Automotives entered into a joint-venture (JT Special Vehicles) with Tata Motors to develop sporty versions of select Tata models, the report said, adding "Whilst the current plan is for the Neo to be sold under the Jayem brand, Tata Motors too is likely to have its own version of the Neo in the future."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reportedly launch the Jayem Neo in Hyderabad. The new car is expected to travel more than 150 kms on a full charge.
The company is stated to have orders for 400 electric Nanos from taxi aggregation platform Ola Cabs.
The Autocar report says that the car will source its electricity from Electra EV which specialises in the business of electric powertrains, battery packs and charging infrastructure.
It may be noted that increase in carbon emissions has drawn the attention of many carmakers to roll out electric vehicles in India. Tata Motors is also looking to make an electric variant of Tata Tigor.
Earlier on September 29, the car manufacturer won a tender to supply 10,000 electric vehicles to Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) which operates under Ministry of Power.
Tata Motors will supply the electric vehicles in two phases - first 500 e-cars to be delivered by end of November 2017 and remaining 9,500 EVs will be delivered in the second phase.
