Tata Motors has introduced Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) in its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cars. Tata Motors has recently opened bookings for the Tiago and Tigor iCNG AMT models — which will be the first automatic CNG vehicles in the country.

The introduction of Twin Cylinder CNG technology is aimed at addressing the longstanding challenge of limited boot space in CNG cars. By doing so, Tata Motors is venturing into uncharted territory, setting a trend by blending automatic transmission with CNG-powered vehicles.

Interested customers can now book their preferred model by visiting Tata Motors' authorized dealerships or through online channels, with a booking amount of Rs 21,000.

Tiago iCNG AMT, Tigor iCNG AMT: Variant details

The Tiago iCNG AMT lineup comprises three variants – XTA CNG, XZA+ CNG, and XZA NRG. Meanwhile, the Tigor iCNG AMT is available in two variants – XZA CNG and XZA+ CNG.

The Tiago and Tigor iCNG AMT promise a seamless transition between petrol and CNG modes, ensuring no discernible difference in vehicle performance. The smooth gear shifter quality aligns with industry standards for Petrol AMT vehicles.

Industry-first features include twin cylinder CNG tanks for optimized boot space, a single advanced Engine Control Unit (ECU) for effortless mode shifting, and direct start in CNG mode, eliminating the need for manual switching during drives.

Both models boast best-in-class safety features, including a micro switch for refueling, thermal incident protection, safe cylinder location, advanced materials to prevent leakage, and a leak detection feature.

Tata Motor's Expansion in the CNG Market

Apart from the technological advancements, Tata Motors has expanded its CNG portfolio over the years. With models like Tiago, Tigor, Altroz, and Punch in its lineup, the company currently holds one of the most extensive offerings in the CNG space. Notably, the CNG industry has witnessed significant growth, with a reported 40.5 per cent increase in FY24 compared to the previous fiscal year.
