The supply chain challenges and semi-conductor shortages have caused a major impact on the output of the auto sector this time. With the recent August 2021 sales numbers, the mounting pressure on the sector can be witnessed. The overall sales fell in the month of August 2021 to 15,86,873 units, compared with 17,90,115 units year on year.

Similarly, the domestic sales of passenger vehicles surged 7 per cent to 2,32,224 units in August 2021, compared to 2,15,916 units in the same month last year.  

As per the data released by the industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), around 1,08,508 passenger cars were sold in the months of August 2021, against 1,24,715 passenger cars in the same month previous year.   

Sales of two-wheelers in the same month under review declined to 13,31,436 units compared to 15,59,665 units sold in the corresponding period of the last financial year. Similarly, the sales of scooters also declined to 4,51,967 units, against 4,56,848 units in the same month last fiscal.  

However, electric two-wheeler sales witnessed a robust growth from 215 units in the same month last year to 1,013 units in August 2021. The sales of motorcycles dipped to 8,25,849 units against 10,32,476 units year on year. The moped sale was also down to 52,607 units in August 2021 from 70,126 units in the same month last year.

Three-wheeler sales last month stood at 23,210 units in August 2021, jumped from 14,534 units in August 2020. On the other side, the utility vehicles sales jumped to 1,12,863 units in August 2021, compared to 81,842 units in the same month last year. In the same way, van sales were also up with 10,853 units in August 2021, against 9,359 units in the corresponding month previous year.
