Maruti Suzuki Alto - small car makes big impact, hits 4 million sales mark

India’s largest passenger car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has revealed that its popular Alto car model, which has been around now for 20 years, has completed over 4 million units during this period, the company said in a media release. Maruti has been introducing changes to keep it contemporary.  Maruti Alto features are aligned to the evolving needs of the customer, the release said. Maruti Alto price starts at Rs 294,800. 

“Alto, over the past two decades has changed the way India commutes. It has ranked as the No.1 selling car in last 16 years and continues to win hearts and surprise Indian car buyers with its exciting value proposition,” the release said quoting Shashank Srivastava, Executive Director (Marketing and Sales) at Maruti Suzuki India Limited said. 

Alto was launched in 2000. Alto crossed the 40-lakh sales figure in August, the company claimed in its release. In FY20, 59 per cent of Alto sales came from upcountry markets which have increased to 62 per cent for the current year, the release further said. 

Maruti exports its Alto brand to 40 countries including markets in Latin America, Africa and South Asia, the company said.

Alto is India’s first BS6 compliant entry-level car, the release further said. Maruti Suzuki Alto’s certified fuel efficiency is 22.05 km/l for Petrol and 31.56 km/kg for CNG. Maruti Suzuki Alto is offered in Petrol and factory fitted CNG option and is sold through Maruti Suzuki’s ARENA sales network of 2,390 dealer sales outlets across 1900 cities.
