Maruti Suzuki beats all, but Tata Motors, Honda do well in May sales too

Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) may be leading the sales race as usual, but other carmakers are doing very well too, the data in May shows. Significantly, rival companies Tata Motors and Honda Cars reported double digit sales growth in the domestic market in the month. This performance is not one-off as in April too sales were quite strong.
Without a doubt, Maruti again proved that it reads the Indian consumer better than anyone else. It logged sales of 1,63,200 units in May, which was up 24.9 per cent from 1,30,676 units in May last year. The major boost was from compact segment cars. Swift, Estilo, Dzire and Baleno sales were up 50.8 per cent to 77,263 units last month as against 51,234 units earlier. Utility vehicles Ertiga, S-Cross and compact SUV Vitara Brezza sales jumped 13.4 per cent to 25,629 units, from 22,608 units in the same month of 2017. The news was pretty bad, surprisingly, in the mini segment as Alto and WagonR saw a sales drop of 3.1 per cent at 37,864 units from 39,089 units in corresponding period of previous year. Hyundai Motor India sales jumped to 45,008 units in May compared with 42,007 units last year.
Multi utility vehicles major Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) reported single digit sales growth. Mahindra logged sales of 20,715 vehicles, including Scorpio and XUV500 compared with 20,392 units in May 2017. However, Tata Motors grabbed the spotlight by logging a 61 per cent increase in sales of its passenger vehicles at 17,489 units in May vis a vis 10,855 units in May 2017.

Honda sales rose 41 per cent at 15,864 units in May, and that was courtesy strong sales of new Amaze. It sold as many as 9,789 units of new Amaze cars in May. Honda had sold 11,278 units last year in same month.
In terms of two-wheelers, Bajaj Auto sales jumped 30 per cent jump to 4,07,044 vis a vis sales of 3,13,756 vehicles units in May last year. TVS Motor sales were reported at 3,09,865 units in May. Big bikes makers Royal Enfield, logged a 23 per cent growth in sales to 74,697. Hero MotoCorp logged sales of 7,06,365 units in May. It had sold 6,33,884 units last year.
