Auto Sales May 2022: Top Indian automobile companies today reported their May sales numbers. Among them were India's largest passenger car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI),  Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), TVS Motor Company and  Kia India. Here are key highlights of the sales numbers reported by the company.

Maruti Suzuki total sales in May satnds at 161,413 units versus 46,555 units in May 2021

The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Wednesday said its total wholesales in May stood at 1,61,413 units.

The company had sold 46,555 units in May 2021, MSI said in a statement.

Last month, the company's domestic sales rose to 1,34,222 units, as against 35,293 units in May 2021, it added.

"The sales figures of May 2022 are not comparable with that of May 2021 as the operations of the company in May 2021 were significantly affected due to COVID-19 related disruptions," the automaker stated.

Sales of mini cars, comprising Alto and S-Presso, stood at 17,408 units last month. It stood at 4,760 in the same month last year.

The company said sales in the compact segment, including models such as Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno and Dzire, was at 67,947 units in May this year. In the corresponding period last year it was at 20,343 units.

Sales of mid-size sedan Ciaz stood at 586 units in the period under review. It stood at 349 units in May 2021.

Utility vehicle sales, including Vitara Brezza, S-Cross and Ertiga, was at 28,051 units, while in the year-ago month it was 6,355 vehicles, MSI said.

Van dispatches stood at 10,482 units last month. In May last year it was 1,096 units.

Exports last month was at 27,191 units, it stood at 11,262 units in May last year. 

Mahindra & Mahindra total sales at 53,726 units in May 17,447 units versus 17,447 units in May 2021

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) on Wednesday said its total sales stood at 53,726 units in May.

The company had reported total sales of 17,447 units in Covid-hit May 2021.

The Mumbai-based auto major's passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market were 26,904 units last month while the same stood at 8,004 units a year ago, the auto major said in a statement.

Commercial vehicle sales of 24,794 units were posted in the month under review, while it was at 7,508 units in the year-ago period.

The company said its exports were reported at 2,028 units in May. The overseas shipments were at 1,935 units in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

"With sales of 26,632 SUVs in May, we continued the growth momentum with all our brands performing well, including XUV700 and Thar," M&M President (Automotive Division) Veejay Nakra said.

The company is witnessing strong bookings and have a robust pipeline, he added.

"We announced the launch of Scorpio-N, which is generating very high interest levels and promises to be yet another blockbuster from Mahindra. Our commercial vehicles have also registered strong growth across segments," Nakra noted.

The automaker is closely monitoring the supply chain related issues, which continue to constraint volumes and are taking appropriate actions to mitigate the impact, he added. 

TVS Motor May total wholesales at 3,02,982 units

TVS Motor Company on Wednesday reported total sales of 3,02,982 units in May vs 1,66,889 units in May 2021

The company had posted a total sales of 1,66,889 units in the same month last year, TVS Motor Company said in a statement.

The year-on-year growth is not comparable due to the low base of sales in May 2021, because of the localised lockdown imposed by the Government of India during that period, the company noted.

Total two-wheelers sales last month stood at 2,87,058 units, while the same was at 1,54,416 units in May 2021, it added.

Domestic two-wheeler sales stood at 1,91,482 units last month. The company had reported sales of 52,084 units in the year-ago month.

The shortage in the supply of semiconductors has impacted the production and sales of premium two-wheelers, the company said.
"We are working aggressively with alternate sources and taking every effort to improve supplies at the earliest...We are optimistic that volumes will revive to normal levels once the semiconductor supplies improve," it added.

Kia India total sales in May up 69% at 18,718 units vs 11,050 units in May 2021

Automaker Kia India on Wednesday said its sales increased 69 per cent year-on-year to 18,718 units in May.

The company had dispatched 11,050 units to dealers amid second wave of COVID-19 in May 2021.

The Sonet became the highest contributor to the company's overall sales with 7,899 units, followed by Seltos (5,953 units), Carens (4,612 units) and Carnival (239 units), Kia India said in a statement.

The company also dispatched 15 EV6 units last month to dealerships as display cars, it added.

With the gradual recovery in the semiconductor shortage, the company said its sales stood at 97,796 units in the first five months of 2022.

With the May 2022 sales performance, the automaker also surpassed the domestic sales milestone of 4.5 lakh units while the Sonet achieved the 1.5 lakh sales mark since its inception, it added.

"We are happy to sustain our sales momentum with yet another strong sales performance. We are growing at 19 per cent plus, which is higher than the industry average growth rate, even when supply chain issues plague the entire auto industry," Kia India VP and Head of Sales and Marketing Hardeep Singh Brar stated.

As part of its commitment to providing sustainable mobility solutions, Kia India said it will be launching its fully electric model -- EV6 on June 2, in the country.
The automaker commenced bookings for EV6 on May 26, 2022 through selective dealerships across India.
