Rising Neck Pain Among Young People: Dr Dhruv Chaturvedi highlights causes and prevention measures
New Delhi [India], November 22: Neck pain, traditionally a condition seen primarily in older adults, is increasingly affecting younger populations due to lifestyle factors, warns leading neurosurgeon Dr. Dhruv Chaturvedi. Dr. Chaturvedi, an expert in spinal health and neurosurgery, has observed a rise in cases of young patients reporting neck discomfort and associated symptoms. This shift, he says, is largely attributed to prolonged screen time, poor posture, and a lack of physical activity.
"Neck pain is not just a discomfort; it can lead to significant physical limitations if left unaddressed," notes Dr Chaturvedi. "We see patients experiencing not only localized pain but also numbness, tingling, and in some cases, decreased arm strength. This can even affect mobility and other essential functions over time." The pain, which may be felt in the front, side, or back of the neck, can also extend down the arms, leading to additional complications like muscle weakness.
Causes of Neck Pain in the Young Population
Dr. Chaturvedi points out that although neck pain can be a result of cervical disc issues, trauma, infections, and even tumors, the most prevalent cause among younger individuals is poor posture. "The extensive use of laptops and gadgets, combined with long working hours and inadequate ergonomic setups, puts undue strain on the neck and spine," he explains.
Preventive Measures for Young Adults
Dr. Chaturvedi offers several practical tips to help young individuals manage and prevent neck pain:
- Switch to a Desktop Setup: Ensure that your screen is at eye level. If the screen is too high or low, it can strain the neck.
- Use an Ergonomic Chair: Adjust your chair so the armrest, desk, and keyboard are level, ensuring proper posture.
- Take Regular Breaks: Every 30-35 minutes, take a break to stretch and move your neck to relieve muscle tension.
- Incorporate Simple Neck Exercises: These can help strengthen neck muscles and improve posture.
- Maintain Physical Activity and a Nutritious Diet: A balanced approach to physical health and nutrition supports overall neck health.
“By adopting these ergonomic practices and being mindful of our posture, we can significantly reduce the risk of neck pain. As we rely more on technology, it’s vital to use it wisely to maintain our health," advises Dr Chaturvedi.
When to Seek Medical Help
If neck pain persists, or if individuals experience symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the arms, Dr Chaturvedi recommends consulting a doctor promptly. "An MRI of the cervical spine is essential for identifying the root cause of persistent neck pain," he says. "In some cases, nerve conduction studies and electromyography also play a role in accurate diagnosis."
Dr Chaturvedi also highlights that surgical intervention may be necessary in severe cases, especially when other treatment options have not provided relief. "Most neck surgeries are routine and involve a short hospital stay of 2-3 days. If performed in a timely manner, they can bring significant relief and improve the patient’s quality of life."
As neck pain continues to impact young lives, Dr. Chaturvedi emphasizes that prevention is key. Through a combination of ergonomic adjustments, regular physical activity, and simple exercises, young individuals can protect their spinal health and avoid the limitations caused by chronic neck pain.
