There are many ways to learn something. Books, courses, programs, and even the internet these days, are full of teachings. Everyone is in a rush to ‘upskill’ and become more successful. It is said that the best way to gain an understanding of anything, is to learn from those people who have already done it and follow their paths to achievement. By this, we do not suggest a blind replication of their vision and strategies, but an intelligent understanding of their journeys and thought process can take us further in our quest for success.
Hence, here are insightful and honest key lessons from the six leading business icons of India. Put on your seat belts, you are in for an insightful journey.
Gopal Goswami -
As a leader in the real estate business, Gopal Goswami, the director of GAP Associates Pvt Ltd. has years’ worth of insights to a safe and secure future. Here is what he shared: “One thing I learned all these years is that making money is necessary but not sufficient. Investing that money wisely with a proper portfolio is the real deal. So, increase your knowledge and learn about money management, no matter which field you work in. Secondly do not give up after failures. Failures are crucial and always teach us things we would not have learnt otherwise. Embrace them and while you celebrate your wins, celebrate the losses too. “
Mohit Chawla
With 10+ years of manufacturing and retail under his belt, his unwavering passion for designs, and strong business acumen, Mohit is the Director of Chawla Jewellers Pvt. Ltd. He believes that, “While hard work, consistency, and determination can take us a long way, it is only necessary and not sufficient. All of this has to be combined with smart work and persistent innovation. The pandemic showed us that literally, anything can happen. It is only through adapting and overcoming that we can succeed. We do not have a dearth of ideas and intelligent minds. However not every thinker is successful. Why? Because of primarily 2 reasons:
1. Not everyone has the ability to complete the journey from ideas to implementation. Unless one puts an effort into an idea, one cannot move forward
2. Risk aversion is the biggest obstacle for an entrepreneur. Taking risks is the only way one can learn. Not taking chances will probably keep you safe for a short while but will not take you anywhere.
Niraj Jawanjal
Niraj has been in the fashion and retail business since 2004. He is pioneer of Intimate Fashion Showcases and Exhibitions in India through his ventures India Intimate Fashion Week and Candy Shop India. Here is what he had to share, “With the fast-changing times, there is a lot of diversion and discouragement for an entrepreneur whether it is the recent setback of COVID19 or the Sluggish Economy, I feel we need to relentlessly work towards our goal irrespective of what is happening around. If one’s passion is fine-tuned with perseverance, then we can sustain the testing times and become stronger & capable enough to handle similar or even more challenging situations ahead.
This is characterized by three traits, which are keys to unlocking the door to success:
1. Never giving up
2. Not being limited by time constraints
3. Staying rooted in the confidence that success is inevitable if you continue to make a concerted effort to attain it”
Pooja Gogia
A passionate Food Entrepreneur & a leading Lifestyle Influencer, Pooja runs a successful retail company, Shakkr that aims to re-kindle the essence of traditional Indian sweets. As a boss lady, she has come far in her endeavor as an entrepreneur challenging societal norms, and shackles with a sweet approach. Here is what she has to share, “I am proud to be the spearhead of a company that inspires innovation. I have a strong faith in our work ethics which are crucial to set an example for future start-ups. Creativity and attention to detail are something that sets you apart from your competitors. I ensure you that openness to creativity and an easy flow of opinions is the need of the hour, it is something that sets you apart from the crowd. The only goal one needs to keep in mind as a member of a team or an as an individual, is to contribute eagerly towards the growth of the company and self, while maintaining one’s own individual identity. Individuality is crucial to getting to the next level and we should strive to bring the best out of every situation. I have noticed that this boosts our confidence levels. It creates a great atmosphere filled with creativity and support.
Secondly in the retail sector specifically, customer service is paramount. I personally think that word of mouth is an excellent strategy for reliable marketing. Today we are a common household name with this strategy so I can vouch for it! Realize that you are enough and have the courage to be different.”
Sachin Yadav
A leader with a keenness to provide consultative technical recommendations, Sachin is the Digital Lead at Emeritus. With a knack for all things digital, he has a treasure of lessons from his multiple years of experience. Here are his insights, “It is important to note that the world today, especially after the pandemic, has gone digital. Learn the digital skills required to thrive in this fast-paced world. I probably cannot stress enough, the importance of digital literacy. The government has also recognized this and is making efforts to digitalize the nation. Start today. Don't get biased by the software or don't let the software govern or run your businesses. Always have the reigns in your control. Every business is different, and every requirement will vary from business to business. While encouraging you to use industry best practices and learn from others’ experiences, I also caution you to not get lost in this complex web of technology. Use not overuse.”
Subhag Jain
KAHO is an Indian renewable energy firm with which Subhag is quite literally lighting up hundreds of lives! Here is what he had to say, “With social media and smartphones in almost every hand, success is coming overnight to people. We are bombarded with success stories day in and day out, with background music. While it is great to honor the wins, why is it that no one talks about its unsustainable nature? With climate change, a rise in global temperatures, and the finite nature of resources, sustainability has become more important than ever. We can build as many businesses as we want but all the hard work will go waste if we cannot sustain and maintain it. This is probably unheard of under the ambit of business advice but take my word for it - value and respect the nature and resources in whatever you do. Irrespective of your endeavor, the disregard, and neglect of resources can cost you dearly. Be mindful and cautious, and drive and strive for change. We are here to improve lives, while we make some money out of it. Only revenue without impact is meaningless. You will realize this sooner or later. All the very best, go green!”
It is rightly said that experience is the best teacher. While you gradually have your own collection of experiences and lesson, keep learning from others. These 6 insightful suggestions have been enlightening to say the least. We hope it helped you!
