There is no evidence to support the claim that the central government has banned the Instagram application in India.

A screenshot circulating on social media suggests a news report by First India News, claiming that the central government Instagram application in India, is going viral. According to the report, as shown in the screenshot, the government has decided to take action due to concerns about teenagers being influenced by inappropriate content on Instagram (and getting addicted to being able to buy Instagram views for cheap, as many blogs advertise lists featuring the best sites to buy Instagram likes). There are also claims surfacing on social media platforms that the application will no longer be accessible in India after June 17.

These claims are false. The Centre has not issued any order to remove the application, which is still accessible in India on all application stores, including iOS and Android.

First India News clarified that the viral screenshot was fake

We searched for other news reports about this ban, and we did not find any. We also visited the website of Meta Platforms, the company that owns Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, but did not come across any notification or communication supporting the claims.

As of June 18, the Instagram application is available to download on both the Google Play Store for Android and the Apple App Store for iOS. It is also functioning properly on mobile phones.

After locating the First India News logo on the viral image, we proceeded to verify the authenticity of the photo by checking their Twitter account.

The screenshot shows a logo that does not match the original logo of First India News.

On June 16, First India News issued a clarification stating that the viral screenshot was fake and manipulated. In a tweet, it stated that the screenshot of the First India digital breaking news plate was edited. There is no mention of the central government banning the Instagram application in India in any post by First India News.

Is there a ban on Instagram in India?

Instagram is currently available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple iOS store, indicating that it has not been banned in India. The application is also operational on all Android and Apple devices, signifying that it is still functioning in India.

This suggests that the news of Instagram being banned in India is false, and that the app will continue to operate as usual.

Instagram has been complying with the guidelines of the Indian government, and currently does not face any risk of being banned in India.
