The 15th Finance Commission (FC) today met the chairmen of 12 municipalities, representatives of political parties, MLAs and zilla parishads, in a bid to gain a broader understanding of the West Bengal economy.

West Bengal is the fifth state to be visited by the Commission, led by Chairman N K Singh, who was welcomed by the state's Finance Minister Amit Mitra here.

"We have brought to their notice the devolution of Central taxes to the states, besides the principle of distribution of the aggregate share of the states in the Central tax revenues.

"We also pointed out issues on the debt burden of the states, on unfavourable land-man ratio," said former West Bengal finance minister Dr Asim Dasgupta, who was part of the team that met the Commission.

Dasgupta said that he also made a suggestion to the Finance Commission regarding the use of the GST in unearthing black money.

Congress MLA of Bagmundi (Purulia) Nepal Mahato said that he pointed out to the proper use of funds for development works in the state.

"We have pointed out that funds were used more for the advertising achievements of the state government, rather than utilising them for developmental works," Mahato said.

Singh will a have meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tomorrow. During its ongoing three-day visit, the Commission will also visit the IT Park in New Town, Madhyamgram Municipality and Kemia Khamarpara Gram Panchayat, officials said.
