New Zealand Earthquake: An earthquake of 7.1 magnitude struck the Kermadec Islands region in New Zealand on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.
New Zealand Earthquake: An earthquake of 7.1 magnitude struck the Kermadec Islands region in New Zealand on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The quake was estimated at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles) USGS added. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii issued a tsunami warning for coasts within 300 km of the quake epicentre in the South Pacific, Xinhua news agency reported.
"Tsunami waves reaching 0.3 m to 1 m above the tide level are possible for some coasts of Kermadec Islands," it added.
Later, to clarify that there is no threat of Tsunami, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) tweeted, "There is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the M7.0 earthquake in the Southern Kermadec Islands. Remember, if an earthquake is long or strong, get gone..."
