Sanjay Malhotra, the revenue secretary and a 1990-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, today (December 9), has been appointed as 26th RBI Governor and succeeded Shaktikanta Das.
Malhotra moved to the Department of Financial Services on December 1, 2022.
Meanwhile, Das' term as RBI Governor is ending tomorrow, December 10 after serving for six years. He was appointed as the 25th Governor of the RBI on December 12, 2018, after the abrupt exit of Urjit Patel.

An Engineering Graduate in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, 56-year-old Malhotra has a Master's degree in Public Policy from Princeton University, USA.
He has an experience of more than three decades in finance and taxation at the State as well as the Central Government. He has worked in sectors including power, finance and taxation, information technology, mines, etc. Presently he is Secretary (Revenue) in the Ministry of Finance.
Previously, he held the post of Secretary in the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. Malhotra has also been the ex-officio Secretary to the GST Council.
As a part of his present assignment, he has been playing an instrumental role in tax policy formulation in respect of direct and indirect taxes.
In his role as RBI governor, Malhotra will be a key player in shaping the interim Budget, which will be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1.
