Flyers alert! In aviation, India lags behind Bangladesh and Indonesia
The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) safety audit revealed that India is not able to even meet the global average score of effective implementation while a country like Singapore has close to perfect score in all eight parameters.
A shocking number has shown that Indian aviation is behind even its South Asian neighbor! And putting things in perspective is the recent Jet Airways incident that has once again raised concerns over how safe it is to take a flight in India. Despite the Ministry of Civil Aviation ordering immediate audit of all airlines, the government action on safety rules has no doubt invited criticism. According to an audit by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) as part of its global Universal Safety Audit Program, 2017, the regulator’s performance in India has been lacklustre.
The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) safety audit revealed that India is not able to even meet the global average score of effective implementation while a country like Singapore has close to perfect score in all eight parameters.
The ICAO conducts audits to determine member states’ safety capabilities and the status of states’ implementation of all safety-relevant ICAO standards and recommended practices, associated procedures, guidance material, and best safety practices.
The audit by the ICAO showed that countries like Bangladesh and Indonesia have earned better scores than India.
Notably, the ICAO audit scrutinises implementation of aviation safety rules across the world besides looking at the implementation of ICAO standards.
Check out the 8 parameters of ICAO:
1. Organisation
2. Licensing
3. Operations
4. Airworthiness
5. Legislation
6. Accident investigation
7. Air navigation services
8. Aerodromes.
Significantly, India has failed to meet global average in five out of eight categories.
India could score 26.04%, while Bangladesh stood at 77.22% in licensing, even as the global average parameter is approximately 72.5%!
According to the report, the accident investigation score of India and Bangladesh is 32.35% and 64.13% respectively, while global average stands at 54.7%! India has managed to beat the global average only in two categories of Operation and Airworthiness.
In all the eight parameters, India lags behind Indonesia and Bangladesh.
