After PAN & mobile numbers, soon driving licences to be linked to Aadhaar
Even as the hearing in Supreme Court over the fundamental right to privacy as Government's move to include Aadhaar in everyday life of every Indian continues, a proposal to link your driving licence with Aadhaar numbers has surfaced.
Bloomberg quoted Ravishankar Prasad, Minister, Information Technology on Tuesday in New Delhi as saying that the government is planning to link driving licences to Aadhaar. He further said that Aadhaar linkages have so far helped the government save Rs 57,000 crore.
The government has already made Aadhaar compulsory for filing income tax returns by making it mandatory to be linked with PAN (Permanent Account Number).
However, this move was challenged in the Supreme Court who later said that those citizens who are already in possession of their Aadhaar numbers must link it with their PANs while those who do not have Aadhaar numbers need not.
